MANILA, Philippines—Multiple Intelligence International School (MIIS) goes beyond being the first educational institution in the Philippines that has based its approach on the multiple intelligence framework implemented in the United States and other countries. It also believes in raising a new breed of leaders who use their intelligences to make a difference.
With this goal in mind, the “Kids Can!: For Kids, By Kids Movement” was established for students to advocate for various social and environmental issues.
Taking part in the recently-held three-day Circuit Makati Bazaar, the “MI Kids Can! #4GreenPH Bazaar” was one of the most-lauded attractions as it showcased how the young MIIS social entrepreneurs advocated for the greener Philippines through their original products and campaigns.
Selected MIIS students performed a medley of original compositions and Christmas carols while accompanied by indigenous instruments at the November 28 event launch.
On November 30, MIIS students assisted by school faculty and staff started selling their green-themed wares in four Youth Social Entrepreneur Booth Themes namely Green Forest, Green Christmas, Green Living and Green Philippines.
Under the Green Forest Booths are Christmas goods that promote the need to save the Philippine rainforest ranging from Rainforest-themed food and gift items to office and school supplies.
Upcycled handmade crafts and food products for a greener holiday celebration fall under Green Christmas.
The Green Living Booth features household items meant as home decors made by students using natural materials, while Green Philippines is made up of upcycled denim, tarpaulin, and “katsa” products. There were various artwork and statement pieces advocating for a greener Philippines.
The annual “Kids Can! For A Cause Bazaar” was pioneered by MIIS in the Philippines in 2000 as the first For Kids, By Kids bazaar in the country. This year’s “Kids Can! Bazaar” benefits the projects of the “Green School Movement, Bahay Mapagmahal,” a partner charity and the MIIS LEED Green School project.
To bolster the spirit of its youth entrepreneurs, MIIS gave away prizes to the winners of “MI Kids Can! #4GreenPh Class” contest namely Best Marketing – Grade 9A Humanitas and Best Booth—3rd Place—Grade 8A and 4A, 2nd Place – Grade 2A, and Best Booth Grand Winner – Grade 1C.
MIIS’s commitment to provide programs that foster the entrepreneurial mindset is embedded in the curriculum from Grade 1 to 12. The MI High School, gives students unique opportunities to gain real-world skills through internship and mentorship. This enables students to discover and develop their purpose and passion.
Through the leadership of Joy Abaquin, founding directress of the MIIS, and best-selling author of Go Negosyo’s “8 Simple Secrets to Raising Entrepreneurs,” she makes it a point to provide students with real world opportunities to apply their intelligences.
“The entrepreneurial mind is not just for the child who would eventually venture into business, but is a mindset that everyone would need whether they go into medicine, politics, or architecture,” points out Abaquin.
