NEW YORK—The S&P 500 Thursday jumped to a new record high on a mixed day for stocks as investors looked ahead to Friday’s monthly jobs report.
At the closing bell, the S&P 500 added 3.35 (0.18 percent) at 1,877.16, besting a record for the second time in three days.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 62.36 (0.38 percent) to 16,422.54, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 5.85 (0.13 percent) to 4,352.13.
US initial jobless claims for the week ending March 1 fell more than expected, by 26,000 to a three-month low of 323,000.
