DALY CITY, Calif.—On the cold and windy Monday morning after Valentine’s Day, Señor Sisig’s intrepid food truck was a vision in bright jeepney colors, parked in front of the tech and appliance store Best Buy. Western Union continued the “love” by offering free lunch to those who came by Best Buy.

Some 180 lucky shoppers got free hot lunch of a Filipino favorite—sisig! Chicken, pork, tofu served sisig style with steamed rice was just what the cold weather called for.

The line snaked toward the food truck for over two hours, regardless of the 56-degree weather. Despite the long wait, everyone agreed that the savory dish of grilled chopped meat or tofu flavored with chopped onions and other herbs and spices commonly used in Filipino cuisine was well worth the sacrifice.

Wearing “Kindness starts here” Western Union T-shirts, its staff happily distributed “free lunch” and “Free Fee with WU” coupons to pleasantly surprised shoppers.

The Filipino community is the third-biggest source of dollar remittances from the US. The saying “the best route to a man’s heart is through his stomach” fits Western Union’s free hot sisig lunch.
