Shell’s Ed Chua is MAP Management Man of the Year

The Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) confers today the “MAP Management Man of the Year 2013” award on Mr. EDGAR “Ed” O. CHUA, country chair of the Shell Companies in the Philippines.

The “MAP Management Man of the Year” is a prestigious award that MAP bestows on individuals in the business community or government for attaining unquestioned distinction in the practice of management and for contributing to the country’s progress. The conferment of the award on Mr. Chua followed a thorough, stringent selection process.  The distinction of “MAP Management Man of the Year” has only been conferred 37 times in the 46-year history of the award.

Mr. Chua was chosen as the 37th “MAP Management Man of the Year” for the following:

1. his exemplary leadership in steering the Shell Companies in the Philippines (SCP) to a level of sustainable growth and profitability that is admired by other Shell companies around the world;

2. his leadership role in the substantial contributions of the SCP to national development and job generation through its huge investments in clean energy development and business process outsourcing;

3. promoting a culture of excellence among the employees of the SCP and motivating them to deliver high-quality products and excellent service for customer satisfaction, while at the same time providing them the opportunity to achieve their personal goals;

4. strengthening the identity of the SCP as socially responsible corporate citizens through the Pilipinas Shell Foundation’s developmental programs on education, health care, environmental protection, science, arts and culture which have improved the lives of many Filipinos all over the country;

5. effectively proving that companies can operate profitably while adopting corporate social responsibility and sustainable development as integral parts of overall corporate strategy; and

Criteria

The criteria for the “MAP Management Man of the Year” award include the following:

1. Integrity, prestige and distinction in the business community;

2. High qualities as a manager exemplified in his leadership, vision, decisiveness, fairness and firmness in dealing with people;

3. Exceptional ability for performing his managerial functions under exceptional conditions, such as creating and managing a new enterprise, reorganizing and re-orienting an existing enterprise, turning around a moribund company considering the difficulties of the times;

4. Active and continuous management at top level of a private business or industrial enterprise, or a government institution for a significant length of time, and in a manner highly deserving of the recognition and commendation of MAP by reason of his contribution to the advancement of management as a career in the Philippines;

5. Contribution to reshaping national values and orientation;

6. Effective service and tangible contribution to nationwide professional, social, civic or charitable undertakings through personal initiative;

7. The organization under his stewardship must have exhibited consistent exemplary performance and achieved stability under the highest standards of business ethics and practice; and

8. The organization must be an entity operating in the Philippines and the business must have contributed substantially to the growth and development of the Philippine economy.

The search for “MAP Management Man of the Year”(MMY) involves a tedious process.   Nominations are generated from the membership, with the help of the MMY Search Committee.   The nominees then go through a rigid screening by the MMY Judging Committee which, as provided for in the MAP bylaws, is composed of select past presidents and past awardees. With the exception of the Chair and the Vice Chair, the names of the members of the MMY Judging Committee are not announced until such time that the search process has been completed.

To ensure a wide search of potential awardees, the MAP has institutionalized a MMY Search Committee, headed by MAP’s immediate past president, to identify and propose nominees for the award.

The MMY Judging Committee selects the most qualified candidate from among the nominees.

The MMY Judging Committee’s choice is then presented to the MAP Board of Governors for approval, and then to the membership during a MAP General Membership Meeting called for the purpose of electing the MMY.

Mr. Chua joined the SCP in 1979 and has had many years of experience in the business fields of chemicals, auditing, supply planning and trading, marketing and sales, lubricants, corporate affairs and general management.   He held senior positions outside the Philippines as transport analyst in Group Planning in the UK and as general manager of the Shell Company of Cambodia.  From July 1999 to August 2003, he held various regional positions in Shell Oil Products East covering all countries East of Suez Canal including China, India, ASEAN, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Mr. Chua earned his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from De La Salle University in 1978 and attended various international seminars and courses including the senior management course in INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.
