Households allowed to sell ‘green’ electricity under new ERC scheme
A program seen to change the power industry landscape has been approved, allowing households to tap renewable energy (RE) sources like the sun and begin selling excess electricity to the grid, based on rules set by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).
“From just being recipients of electricity, users may also now become generators, supplying not only their electricity requirements but also that of others through their distribution utilities’ system,” ERC chair and CEO Zenaida G. Cruz-Ducut said in a statement.
The ERC resolution on the so-called net-metering program for renewable energy allows consumers with updated electricity bill payments to generate and sell power from RE sources like solar, wind, biomass or similarly “green” sources. Qualified households may be allowed to install about 100 kilowatts of RE capacity in their premises, according to the ERC resolution.
