DURING TURBULENT TIMES, IT IS important to keep focused on financial goals, smart spending and budgeting, getting out of debt and staying positive. This will be the main message in Citibank Philippines and INQUIRER.net’s seminar on personal finance on Aug. 2, 2008 at the AIM Conference Center in Makati City.
The seminar is being held to celebrate personal finance blog MoneySmart’s first year anniversary and the 100th article of “Take Charge of Your Money,” Citibank’s content partnership agreement with the online publication.
Both spots in INQUIRER.net hope to help more Filipinos get closer to financial independence. Citibank country director Mark Jones said the bank’s commitment to financial education is a natural extension of the work that it does.
“It allows us to address audiences that are not necessarily our clients. Around the world, Citibank actively supports a wide range of financial education programs -- from showing microentrepreneurs how to better manage their business to teaching kids the value of saving early to promoting the responsible use of credit,” he said.
INQUIRER.net editor in chief Javier Vicente Rufino said: “This seminar is another way to reach out to our readers and share tips and techniques on personal finance -- an important topic amid today’s high prices.”
One of the speakers is multi-awarded mathematician and educator Dr. Queena Lee-Chua, also a Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist who will talk about the rising inflation and how it can affect one’s savings, as well as the importance of setting financial goals.
Chinkee Tan, author of the book “Till Debt Do Us Part” will then share the dangers of overspending and over borrowing and show the audience how to get out of a debt trap and to manage credit wisely.
Ramon Tejero, head of research and portfolio strategy for Citi’s insurance and investments arm in the Philippines, Citicorp Financial Services & Insurance Brokerage Phils. Inc., will walk the participants through the step-by-step preparation of a financial plan -- determining their net worth and cash flow, preparing a budget or spending plan, and preparing a savings and investing plan.
The half-day seminar starts at 1:30 in the afternoon and participants will pay a nominal fee of P300. Afternoon snacks and conference materials are included in the cost. Interested parties can sign up at register@iluvlearning.com.
Citibank and INQUIRER.net’s partners in mounting the seminar are MoneySmarts by Salve Duplito, Money Sense magazine and organizer Learning Curve.
