Fuel subsidy to start May 1, says energy chief

MANILA, Philippines?The Department of Energy plans to start by May 1 the distribution of ?smart cards? to jeepney drivers under the government's fuel assistance program.

In a news briefing Thursday, Energy Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras said over 214,000 cards will be distributed, each good for P1,050 worth of diesel fuel.

The amount, he said, is equivalent to a discount in the price of fuel of P35 per day for one month for jeepney drivers.

The assistance will help ease the impact of rising fuel prices on the local transport sector, he said.
