Canadians oppose Chinese takeover of energy firm

OTTAWA—Nearly six in 10 Canadians believe their industry minister should block the proposed takeover of Calgary-based oil and gas company Nexen by China’s state-owned CNOOC, a poll showed Tuesday.

Federal Industry Minister Christian Paradis is expected to pass judgment on the $15.1 billion (11.5 billion euro) takeover bid on the basis of whether it provides a net benefit to Canada under investment laws.

The Angus Reid online public opinion survey of 1,000 Canadians found that 58 percent of respondents believe the Canadian government should nix the takeover, while only 12 percent said it should be allowed.

The majority fear that CNOOC [China National Offshore Oil Corp.], would have a competitive advantage over public companies or believe foreign governments should not be able to control resources on Canadian soil.

The proposed takeover would be China’s largest foreign investment and its largest energy deal, according to data firm Dealogic.

Do you not know that you can buy shares in these companies and take over control of these operations so put your money where your mouth is. i have!!!!!

China is importing all it’s resources from all over the world while they keep theirs in reserve. They also hold back on exporting their own resources. If the world keeps this up then China will be the only ones with resources left to exploit. Then the world will become theirs.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/MJFXCRSCXRWPLL42QQKSINC3AQ Mamerto

This “system of importing resources” has long been practiced by the U.S.A.

Now…Beware of the Chinese bearing gifts. They would be the world’s next headache. The international community bears witness on how China bullies its smaller neighbors like Japan and the Philippines. It has a swollen head now that it becomes economically and in some extent militarily powerful that it knows and respects no other laws except its own and this what makes it more dangerous than the cold-war foes of the United States and its allies.

“…believe foreign governments should not be able to control resources on Canadian soil.” The above policy-belief by Canadians SHOULD also be the Policy here in the Philippines.

FOREIGN GOVERNMENT -or- FOREIGN CAPITAL should have NO control or access  to our natural resources &/or utility services in Light, Power, Water, Transportation and Communications.

    Kababayans…, gumising kayo

    • pickledtrout

wrong foreign governments should not be allowed but foreign capital from publicly trading comapnies should this type of foreign investing you need and want. don’t forget you can buy shares in these companies. if these companies are not working in your country then where is the industry getting its seed capital. you have to understand that your country was not doing it on its own it needed this seed capital

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/MJFXCRSCXRWPLL42QQKSINC3AQ Mamerto

Foreign Governments own this foreign capital.
Better for this country to need capital and not go on…, rather than
have Foreign Capital say when this country can continue to go on.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/MJFXCRSCXRWPLL42QQKSINC3AQ Mamerto

Foreign government own those foreign capital.
More so with those capital from Red China.

Better for our government not to go on….RATHER THAN HAVE
foreign govt send foreign capital and tell this government when to go on.
