Audi wins International Engine of the Year Award anew

/ 03:35 AM July 04, 2012

For the third year in a row, 76 motoring journalists around the world voted the Audi 2.5-liter TFSI engine as the “International Engine of the Year 2012” in the 2-liter to 2.5-liter category.

Citing an excellent torque range, the jurists who cast their votes in favor of this engine said it has “a gorgeous sound which is a stand out in any crowd.”

The 2.5-liter TSFI engine is being used in the Audi RS 3 Sportback, TT RS Coupe and Roadster variants that feature both a turbocharger and FSI gasoline direct injection, considered as the brand’s core technologies.

The Audi TT RS Coupe and Roadster models were recently introduced internationally, and has a displacement of 2,480 cc that has a peak power output of 265 kW (360 hp) and peak torque of 465 Nm (343 lb-ft). This propels the car from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds for the Coupe, and a tad slower for the Roadster with 4.2 seconds.

The TFSI engine is also available in the RS 3 Sportback, but even with the same displacement of 2,480 cc, this engine only produces 250 kW (340 hp) between 5,400 and 6,500 rpm and gives a peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) from 1,600 to 5,300 rpm.

This takes the RS 3 Sportback 4.6 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) and is considered a best-in-class performance figure. With a speed limiter, its governed top speed is 250 kph (155 mph).

This win also marks the eighth category win in a row at the International Engine of the Year Awards for Audi’s TFSI technology. From the year 2005 to 2009, the Audi 2.0-liter TFSI engine also won several awards in the 1.8-liter to 2.0-liter category.
