PAL gets new Boeing 777 passenger jet

By

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines has taken delivery of its newest Boeing 777-300 passenger jet, bringing its fleet of flagship long-range aircraft to three.

However, a dark cloud still hangs over the company, now controlled by conglomerate San Miguel Corp., given the country’s category 2 status with the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which prohibits local carriers from expanding their American operations.

“PAL’s brand-new Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft arrives in Manila from the US plane maker’s plant in Seattle, Washington,” the company said on its website.

“The third B777 in PAL’s wide body fleet, the new plane will immediately go into service across the Pacific and Australia, its first assignment,” the company said.

PAL said the new plane would be fielded first to flights to Australia. If and when the country regains its category 1 status with the FAA, the plane would immediately be transferred to US flights.

The Boeing 777 planes are significantly more efficient than PAL’s fleet of Boeing 747 jumbo jets. Using the new planes would allow PAL to make more money from its US flights, which are among the most profitable in its network.

The plane was officially received by PAL vice president for operations Ismael Augusto Gozon in a ceremony with Boeing field service manager Gary Youngblood at the Lufthansa Technik Philippines facility in Pasay.

Wow, bagong 2nd hand planes. Suggest ko sa PAL, bilhin ang mga lumang units ng Singapore Airlines, pero ipa welding nyo muna sa welding shop ni Manoy Tomas, baka may butas na.

Pardon me, Philippine Airlines does not operate second hand narrow-body or wide-body aircraft as it shows danger to accidents. This Third B77W is really brand new from Boeing Everett factory in Seattle. And of course, to make it airworthy, it must be maintained in LTP. Wala nang lumang eroplanong lumilipad sa ere, although some of it are flying esp. in Africa.

One more B777 will be delivered this November and another 3 next year. B787 Dreamliner and B747-800 Intercontinental will be joining their fleet in 2015. Their A340 fleet will be re-delivered and all A330s will be transferred to Airphil Express.

investing on new planes are a good start but having a sustainable business model is key in turning things around.

SMC said they’ll turn PAL’s fortunes around in a year’s time which means they only have 9 months to go before they have to show the numbers that they’ve done what the taipan failed to do. Purchasing more planes with no passengers may not be a good idea.. isnt PAL currently #3 only in passengers flown? more of like “build it and they will come..” mentality.. well its their money.. and if people wont fly with them? fire some more people?

What I know is that it was ordered way before SMC took over PAL.

The problem with this jumbo jet is, unless you are sitting on business or first class, you’ll be sitting on a hard cramped seat on economy class getting to your destination weaker that when you thought it will be a wonderful flight! I’ve tried it and experience will tell there is no comparison sitting on a B747-400 jumbo vs this latest model.

      Quite true.
