$100-M ADB loan eyed for solar rooftop projects

By

The Asian Development Bank may allocate some $100 million (about P4.3 billion) for lending to local building owners who will install solar panels on their rooftops, similar to what ADB did in its 20-year-old headquarters in Ortigas.

At the launching of ADB’s solar rooftop project recently, Seethapathy Chander, director general of ADB’s regional and sustainable development department, said he was expecting the number of solar panel installations to increase after the Manila-based lender showed how this could be an economically and environmentally viable business proposition.

ADB’s own solar project involved the installation 2,040 photovoltaic panels on the roof of ADB’s main building. These panels have a capacity of 571 kilowatts (about half a megawatt) and will be generating 613 megawatt-hours of electricity a year, which can be used to run a portion of the ADB’s air conditioning, lighting and computer systems. It will also reduce its carbon footprint.

The capacity to be generated by ADB is enough to provide energy to 245 families, assuming that the average family in Metro Manila uses 2,500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) yearly.

Chander noted that for this year alone, solar rooftop projects may be able to generate a combined 15 MW. For next year, the installations of solar panels on rooftops are expected to further generate another 100 MW.

“Using rooftops and other open spaces is an efficient way for businesses and homes to capture and use the energy of the sun. We hope other companies will follow ADB’s example,” Chander said.

    In one European country(i forgot where it is but), if a household have a solar panel or electricity producing wind turbine you are also connected to the national electric grid.  So any excess electricity produced by the solar panel will flow back to the national grid.  The house holder will then be paid of the electricity they produce.  This is paid via a credit to their electricity bill.  In some instance, they get some money back. Maybe we look at this model as well if we want to be less dependent on fossil fuel and carbon intensive source of power in the future. Meralco will not be too happy if this happens though.

    Conservative estimation:

    Panel cost 1 kW (no tax and duty) = $1000 = Php 42000
    Custom taxes, vat = 4200 + 5040 = Php 9040
    Shipping Cost = Php 10000
    Deepm cycle battery, inverter/charger, cables, breakers etc. = Php 32000
    Total = Php 93,040

    Annual Savings : 1 kW x 6 hours/day x Php11 /kWH x 365 days/year. = Php 24090

    ROI = 93040 / 24090 = 3.86 years or 46.3 months

    New investment for battery maybe needed at the end of 4th year.

    Dapat munang pag-aralan ng ating Gobyerno ang pautang na ito. Walang katotohanan ang minumungkahi ng ADB tungkol sa Solar Power System na ito. Pawang ang mga Pagawaan o Korporasyon lamang ang kikita, at kailanman ay hiindi babalik ang capital investment na ilalagak dito. Gumawa muna kayo ng Life Cycle Cost at Return of Investment bago ninyo pirmahan ang pautang na ito. Dahil kahit 50 taon pang gamitin ang Solar Power na ito ay hindi babalik ang puhunan na ilalagak ninyo.

      That depends on how you use the system pre! ADB does not recommend this system if its not feasible down to the lowest level of users. This system last almost indefinitely if you know how to maintain it.

        enteng tama ka ang pautang ay para sa private and public building owners di lang para sa gobyerno,kun kaya k lang e di nagpa install na ako sa bahay namin,para independent na ako sa kunsumisyon sa meralco
