Philippines to leapfrog to be 16th largest economy by 2050

By:

The Philippines and Peru are among emerging economies that would become much more prominent in the next few decades, helped by demographics and rising education standards, with the Philippines set to leapfrog 27 places to become the 16th largest economy by 2050, according to a prediction of international bank HSBC.

The bank expected China to overtake the United States as the world’s biggest economy by 2050, and said strong growth rates in other developing countries would help drive the global economy.

“Plenty of places in the world look set to deliver very strong rates of growth. But they are not in the developed world, which faces both structural and cyclical head winds. They are in the emerging world,” the bank  said in a report “The World in 2050.”

HSBC based its forecasts on fundamentals such as current income per capita, rule of law, democracy, education levels and demographic change.

The bank said the Philippines would become a “star performer” in terms of  its economic leap in the global rankings.

HSBC said the Philippines was likely to post an average growth of 7 percent in the next 40 years.

Breaking down the average growth forecast, the bank said the country would likely grow by 8.4 percent from 2010 to 2020, by 7.3 percent from 2020 to 2030, and by 6.6 percent from 2030 to 2040, and by

5.8 percent from 2040 to 2050.

It said the advantage of the Philippines was its favorable macroeconomic fundamentals and improving governance.

Economic officials of the government often harp on what they call the country’s positive macroeconomic fundamentals that include stable inflation, sustained growth over the years (it grew even when the global economy shrank in 2009), stable banking and financial system, and improving fiscal position.

Growing population a plus

HSBC said the Philippines was also put at an advantageous position by its growing population, which, if properly educated and trained, should help the economy generate more income over the next decades.

The fact that the Philippines has relatively low income gives it much room for growth, and that its favorable fundamentals will help the country maximize that room, the bank said.

“The most potent recipe for growth is a country that scores highly on the fundamentals discussed but currently has low income per capita. These economies should deliver the highest growth in income per capita as they ‘catch up’ with those with similar fundamentals,” HSBC said.

Top 20

According to HSBC’s forecast, the Top 20 largest economies by 2050 will be China, United States, India, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico, France, Canada, Italy, Turkey, South Korea, Spain, Russia, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, Argentina and Egypt.

The Philippines’ 16th rank by 2050 in terms of economic size marks a 27-notch improvement from its performance in 2010, said HSBC.

The bank thus said that the Philippines was expected to post the biggest leap in terms of economic ranking over the next four decades. “The Philippines looks set for a multidecade run of strong growth.”

HSBC said Peru should average annual growth of 5.5 percent over the same period.

The sheer pace of population growth in countries such as Nigeria and Pakistan means that these economies will swell in size to be included among the 100 biggest economies even if their incomes on a per-capita basis remain low.

HSBC said lower scores for rule of law in Latin America constrained its per capita income projections for the region though it noted that Brazil was making headway in this aspect.

Losers

“The losers are the small population, aging economies of Europe,” added the bank, which said the demographics in much of Europe underscored concerns about the debt problems faced by many of the continent’s governments.

If sufficiently open to modern technology, developing countries could enjoy many years of robust GDP growth although they could struggle for growth drivers once they have adapted to technological advances,

HSBC said.

“The initial years of development could be described as ‘copy-and-paste’ growth, as countries open themselves up and adapt to the world’s existing technologies. Once the ‘copy-and-paste’ growth is complete … many economies struggle and get stuck in what is often known as the middle-income trap.”

“But many of the countries we are considering are still at such an extremely low level of development that there are years of this ‘copy-and-paste’ growth ahead,” it added.

China

It was here that many of the pessimism about China was misplaced, the bank argued.

“One of the most commonly cited reasons for concern about China is the high rate of investment as a percentage of GDP … (But) we believe the strong rate of investment is entirely justified—providing China with much needed basic infrastructure,” it said.

The bank said high levels of education in Central and Eastern Europe meant that the regions could enjoy strong income per capita growth in the coming years before weak demographics eventually sap economic growth.

“While education rates are similar (to the West), the average income per capita in the central and eastern Europe block is just one fifth that of the developed world. For this reason … economies have great scope to catch up in income per capita,” HSBC said.

“Some of the smaller Eastern European countries—Romania, the Czech Republic and Serbia—(should) all do extremely well, particularly in the coming decade, before demographics prove to be more of a drag.” With a report from Reuters

The good news:- Philippines to be 16th largest economy in the world in 2050

The bad news :- The population of the Philippines will be 500 million, GDP per head – same as 2012, 499 million of them still earning 5$ a day, 100 oligrchs earning gazillion dollars a second.

How to change paths ? Only a SUSTAINED rebelious period will do that, and SIGNIFICANTLY less babies

“HSBC said the Philippines was also put at an advantageous position by its growing population, which, if properly educated and trained, should help the economy generate more income over the next decades.”
Bill Clinton said something similar last year, to the consternation of some NGOs, the pro-RH folks and feminists.
Population was, and still is, an asset for China, India and Indonesia. Why can’t Marty (reactor below) and others of his/her ilk accept that?

  • Anonymous

Napaka-negative ng ibang tao rito. Walang bilib sa kapwa Pinoy, o sa bansa niya mismo. It’s a wonder things ever get done around here.

Pero kapag ibang bansa naman, puro papuri, kesyo hindi natin maabot o malalampasan ang mga nagawa nila.

Ano kayang mali sa ganitong pag-iisip?

When you think of your “limits” even before you begin the journey to get there, you set yourself up for mediocrity and even failure. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Thus, the laziness. Thus, the cynicism. Thus, the lack of discipline. Thus, the lack of will to do things right. Thus, the lack of drive and initiative to achieve and do things not for others, but for ourselves as a people. We lack esteem in ourselves as a nation who can compete globally. Such a tragedy and waste.

  • http://twitter.com/martingorilla marty

Of course it is very good report for Philippines. My reply below was meant to be funny too !

But i was making a serious point too, You must look at GDP per head and spread of wealth, NOT simply total wealth. China is still a VERY poor country per head, on the same level as Albania (one of the very poorest countries in Europe). Japan has more people than Philippines, but GDP per head is much greater than the rest of Asia.

Same for India and Indonesia, recently an Indian politician said it was acceptable for rural people to live on 35 pesos a DAY

But intelligent educated people in Philippines, or elsewhere, when they see how tiny their salaries are compared to those in neighbouring countries, will always emigrate. That is the problem. When you have a tiny number of oligarchs , hoovering up nearly all the wealth of the country in their monopolies, dissuading foreign investment and attitudes, because they don’t want any competition, things will never change. Even if there are many properly educated and trained people. The wealth will be only in the hands of a few who sell products to overseas country’s workers

  • Anonymous

There is a qualifier: if properly educated and trained.

I don’t think the RH bill limits the number of children a couple can have. I don’t see anything wrong with proper spacing of childbirth. Pwede naman talaga mag anak ng madami kung sure na mapapag-aral ito at mabibigyan ng magandang buhay. The number of your children directly affects the economy of your household.

The population of the Philippines will not be 500 million; you are clearly exaggerating your opinion. You don’t even name your source. According to Goldman-Sachs, the population will be around 148 million. Incidentally, Goldman-Sachs had something similar to say: the country’s assets are its people. In fact, it projected the Philippines to be the world’s 14th biggest economy by 2050. Naysayers and doomsayers . . . tsk tsk.

So what if we have a bigger population?

Its is projected that by 2100 the population of the PH will double its population to around 188 million then it will stabilized and will go down to 187 million.

The same with the USA, by 2100 its population will be around 600 million double from its current population of 300 million.

But in the case of USA its population will continue to grow.

This is so because of the current policy of the US government to continue accepting alot of immigrants.

They want this coz they know that people are the best resource of a country.

It is also projected by Goldman-Sachs that by 2050 the PH will belong to the top 20 largest and riches economies in the world.

The article is right in saying that other countries will see the decline of their economies coz of underpopulation or aging population.

It is also important to see that the continued exodus of millions of OFWs is creating a new generations of Pnoys that are richer or afffluent.

People do not realised this but, working abroad is helping the PH economy to grow.

Also people do not realized that in this world, countries will compete with one another, meaning they will try to out perform one another.

It will be a tight competition and their governments know this that is why their governments will also try to sabotage the progress of other countries in order to control them.

One good example of this is the “RH bill”.

Of course, the RH bill involves BILLIONS of money just to buy condoms and pills/IUDs aside from the truth that some of these are abortifacient.

One chinese demographer even stated that there will be BIG problems if the government will mess with the population. They are now projecting that China will eventually have big problems in their labor and social services due to shrinking young people to support their system.

Do not be mislead, even in USA people living in poverty as of Sept. 13, 2011 census is more than FOURTY SIX MILLION for 2010 ( ONE HALFof the PH population) and more tha 58% live in poverty in one year (experience being poor) in people age 25-75 years old.

As the holy bible said (mind you NOT a catholic bible)

“There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.” Deuteronomy 15:11

Really? I’ll look forward to that day when most Pinoys have learned to develop that long-awaited discipline among ourselves. Otherwise, it will remain a prediction.

  • Anonymous

Excuse me for my comment, I don’t mean to demean anybody.
I just would like to make a point only.

Excuse me, but many of the TAIPANS ( very rich chinese-pinoys) are not trained in any overated universities. Many of them are even undergrads!

    But they are very affluent!

We should be inspired from them. That poverty and big number of siblings are NOT hindrance in becoming affluent member of our society.

I feel strongly to the RH bill coz we ourselves have become affluent despite of having big number of siblings and was poor then.

Aside from that, RH bill is promoting mass murder of innocent lives.

    And that is WRONG!

Well its to good know and we know that it’s not impossible to happen in our country. Given the positive perceptions by other countries when it comes to our economic & political policies  and activities for the past months of PNOY’s administration then it would not take long to achieve this development. Provided that we will not encounter another GMA’s corrupt leadership.

2050 is a long way to go. 16th place? Wishful thinking, Considering all the negative factors such as rampant corruption, worsening peace and order situation, labor militancy etc.,which are stagnating the economy, 16th place is impossible. Maintaining first place in asia for corruption till 2050 and beyond would be more attainable and realistic.

This country badly needs to eliminate the following in order to succeed:
    1) Bad politicians
    2) Cynic and Pessimistic Filipinos
    3) The Filipino crabs

We need to prioritize 2&3. Bad politicians may come and go, but these people (2&3) poison the culture of Filipinos in the long term.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JEMNLLYAP5EA7SM3A6QUOGV62Q Chris

According the CIA World Factbook of 2011, we are now the 33rd largest economy in the world based on GDP at purchasing parity valued at $351B or $189B based on official exchange rate. So it’s not impossible we can be on 16th place, 40 years from now.

However, on a per capita (per person) basis we are at 163rd place out of 227. No wonder, many people live in poverty. Many are poor and a very few are rich, that’s why we have a lot of cynic/pessimistic people around even in this forum. I don’t blame you, however, there’s nothing wrong of being hopeful and optimistic. But we have to act to make it real.

Sa mga hindi nakaintindi, wag na kayong magreact.

  • Anonymous

    Chris:

you are still assuming and predicting!!. You never know ano mang yari 40 years from now!. so shut up!. According according kapa diyan!. Im sure at that time…I ASSUME OR PREDICTING na at that year 2050 occupy na ang pilipinas ng mga CHINESE!!!. kawawa kayo diyan!.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JEMNLLYAP5EA7SM3A6QUOGV62Q Chris

well you shut up.. these assumptions came from economic experts (im not sure if you know what it means) not from people like you.. and now you’re also assuming that we will be occupied by the Chinese.. haaha.. whatever happens, kasama ka rin dun.. But I’m sure right now you’re just bitter since a lot of people contradicts your baseless opinion.

  • Anonymous

Chris: Mali naman yung info mo. Philippines is in 33rd largest economy right now??!!!. HIndi ba 43rd?. Leapfrog to 27 places so ang labas 16 prediction nila sa 2050..yung ang tama!!!. BOBO!!. Kung 33rd ranking ang PInas and then leapfrog 27 places so sa 2050 ang pinas nasa 6 ranking na???. BOBO mo talaga!. Gawa gawa mo lng to!. Your funny man!. BOBO!!

  • Anonymous

… yes, may be granted, assuming that graft and corruption is eradicated… until then, why wait 2050 if it can be fixed right here, right now…. 2050 sounds like a good number but that is 38 years from now… how about 2020? …. ewan natin~

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IZIVLD7PEVE6AK5R7JZBBW52WE guru

    Exactly!!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JEMNLLYAP5EA7SM3A6QUOGV62Q Chris

Magbasa ka muna…hanapin mo sa CIA World Factbook of 2011. The number 33rd I’m talking is based on GDP at purchasing parity valued at $351B. The 43rd is based on official exchange rate of which HSBC is using. If you know how to read — the purchasing parity index is more reliable compared to GDP based on official exchange rate. For whatever ranking 33rd or 43rd we are still an economy on the Top 50 which is not to be ignored unlike for some people, who doesn’t know how to read, who always thinks we are at the bottom, a hopeless country with the worst economy.

Magbasa ka muna bago kau magreact.. kc for sure wla kang alam sa economics.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JEMNLLYAP5EA7SM3A6QUOGV62Q Chris

What the writer failed to include is this very important statement:

“We openly admit that behind these projections we assume governments build on their recent progress and remain solely focused on increasing the living standards for their populations,” the report says. “Of course, this maybe an overly glossy way of viewing the world.”
Chief factors that may derail economies moving forward, the report says: War, energy consumption constraints, climate change, and growing barriers to population movement across borders.

  • Anonymous

    Chris:

All you do in your life is searching, predicting, assuming and etc… Walang alam sa economics??!!. lol. By the way wala ako sa Pinas. So hindi ako kasama sa kahirapan diyan.  Nasa America ako. Im 26 years old. I have a job earning $65000 a year. I have my own apartment, good car and a good life here. Ikaw continue sa ginagawa mo mag search ng search!. Nag yabang din ako di ba??!. Pero totoo!. Ikaw yabang mo pero naghihirap ka diyan. Im sure you are still living with your parents!!!. haha. by the way i dont waste my time reading non sense topics. Waste my time. Predicting and assuming on my point of view is meaningless!.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OAFZIN56TAAM73TEKNPNEBQV3U AdrianD

The prediction is based on the current efforts of this administration, maybe the experts were also assuming a dramtic mitigation of  corruption for the years to come. However the next elected President of this Republic will easily change that ”positive future”

Imagine a Pres. Binay.. Now what do you think a traditional trapo will do to that prediction?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6EF5PUVD7WK3V3XLP2FYAQZ4O4 Jomjom

You don’t get it.. This ranking is based on the absolute value of the GDP. The real measure of prosperity is per capita  income or GDP divided by population. Even if our GDP is bigger than Singapore, our per capita is way below because Singapore has about 5 million people while we are almost 100 million.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JEMNLLYAP5EA7SM3A6QUOGV62Q Chris

I may not be richer than you, but FYI im not poor, I’m living my happy life here in our country (whom you despise) and I travel a lot. & of course im not living with my parents – I have my own house — not renting — yet only 28 . And of course I’m a professional who is well versed in economics.

Feeling mo mayabang ako kc nagsabi ako ng totoo. I know you’re hurt coz it’s the truth. You just diverted the topic, a typical defense mechanism.. And it seems ikaw pa nga ang nagmamayabang.. Ikaw na ang mayaman.. heheh.. pero mas may alam ako sau and im positive for our country’s future despite the several crabs of our society who are always hopeless.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JEMNLLYAP5EA7SM3A6QUOGV62Q Chris

recession wla na?? unemployment bumaba na?? read again..coz the US economy is still recovering… however it’s only a temporary recovery unless your government wipes out the unsustainable budget deficit (which I think would take a very long time) and you and other indebted Americans keeps spending.. tsk tsk..

“Tumaas ang dollar” – alam mo bkit? dahil bumagsak ang euro.. at hindi ibig sbhin, maganda ang kalagayan ng US economy..

“Halos lahat nang company diyan ay pag a-ari ng mga Americano!” – wrong again — malaki ang percentage na pinagmamay-ari  ng Filipino elite (Chinoys, half-Spanish, etc.) — e.g. SM, Ayala, SMC, Aboitiz or MPIC.. please read again..

“Kung tangalin niyan lahat diyan kawawa kayo diyan!.” – Right now, hindi mangyayari yan.. maybe in the long term – the call centers (due to the impending bill in your senate) which is highly unlikely na ma approve.. and FYI, I’m not working in a call center… haahaha..

‘SUSTAINABLE GROWTH’ is what the Philippines need in order to be the 16 largest economy.

All of these projections are for naught if our problem on corruption, discipline, skewed perception on prestige, crime, and pseudo nepotistic and oligarchic practices remain entrenched in our society.

i noticed that many pinoys in pnas have their perception of the US recession based overwhelmingly in a philippine setting. i travel regularly to the US and yes you may read news about the recession in the states and the supposed positive growth in the philippines but comparatively the americans still have more  and are accorded to more priviledges in life.

i want the philippines to succeed but i also will not sugar-coat the prevalent conditions in the country and pass on to our next generation the same false hopes that were given to me by previous corrupt governments.

Philippines to leapfrog to be 16th largest economy by 2050

    ****************
    Here’s more:

Goldman Sachs identifies Philippines among the Next Eleven (N-11) countries, after the BRICS,
that will  propel the world economy in the 21st century. It now identifies the Phlippines,
along with Iran, Mexico and Turkey as a Newly Industrialized Country (NIC).

    Wikileaks’ N-11 further states:
“The Philippines had shown its economic stability in facing financial crises.According to Goldman
Sachs, the Philippine economy will become the 14th largest economy in the world (by Nominal GDP) by 2050″, overtaking Canada and Italy.

    **************

This is possible if the Philippines maintain 7-8% growth for 40 years. If the Philippines can make it then this prediction is possible!. 40 years from now!. :-D

i think this article is abit too optimistic, everybody said when Japan was emerging that they would eventually leapfrog the US and become the richest country, but now there 3rd behind US and China.. so I think although not impossible it would be optimistic that Philippines will be the 16th richest by 2050, and theres no guarantee China will overtake the US, just as Japan didnt

  • Anonymous

Being half filipino though Id lyk to think the country is making necessary improvements to improve   the prosperity which the people so desperately deserve, by tackling wide spread corruption…. investing more heavily in education… and in thinking innovatively and creatively as Taiwan and South Korea have shown.. I live in the UK and I’m sure that even if China overtakes the US in 2050 which i doubt, US/UK/EU/Japanese living standards will continue to be far greater than average per capita in China..

Tama na ang patatalo rito. Ang prediksyon kung matutuloy laban in Pacquiao at Mayweather, kanino kayo pupusta?

  • Anonymous

This article unbelievable but I like the prediction. The 2nd good thing; uplifts the morale of Filipino that there’s still hope for Philippine economy to grow. This maybe had something to do with Aquino’s Gov’t. campaign against corruption. The key really lies on good governance, transparency, eradication of graft and corruption. I do hope FOI Bill will be approved into law sooner.

    Thanks to the writer.

  • Anonymous

There are still people who know that predictions CAN but will NOT NECESSARILY come true.
Anyways, to achieve 16th place will require:

+ More spending on infrastructure (that is what should be prioritized)
+ Election of better, more competent personnel into public offices (also actors can be like that, though seldom)
+ Improvement in education system (multiple choice exams are not really optimal)

And, with the increase of consumption due to better economics comes the increase in waste amount. Actually, by now on, a waste management plan must be developed and then implemented. Or else, instead of more fun, we end up having more garbage in the landscape killing the fun.

“That the Filipino people will once again be proud of being a Filipino,
free from mockery from the outside world of unimaginable negativity.”

Then how come, there is this “mockery from the outside world of unimaginable negativity”? Because some outsiders perceive this country in another, for you unfavored, way. That does not mean necessarily bad mouthing. They just state, what they observe.

But the “outside world” did also in the past have positive comments on the Philippines. Lee Kuan Yew in his newest book did even acknowledge that Filipinos can be even more creative than his Singaporean fellow countrymen.

Former Singaporean President SR Nathan also sees the great potential of this country but recognized it didn’t fully use the potential in the last 50 years.

So, not all the outside world is bad or does not have a malicious intent when describing the current state of the Philippine nation.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JMC5U4MV3DXXTD4XNP7YY4TKWU Nap

HSBC should have a short-term investment in the Philippines and making such wild speculation for their investment to grow.  more than 25 years since EDSA revolution and still we are the laggard of Asia.

As long as there is a culture of corruption, and distrust among our people, then this will just be another dream and we will be a laughingstock of the outside world.

We have a broken system that needs to be overhauled.

Hmmm…why 2050 why not in 10 to 20 years or maybe less so I can still witness it? What`s the drag in our society since after all we started out as number two besides Japan and suddenly government policies hasten our decline from a proud society down to a somewhat like a beggar in which we are now?

indeed, btw Indonesia does not need to wait until 2050 to be be in “TRILLION DOLLAR ECONOMY CLUB”,they already there now. This is a country that have a lot of similarity with RP,but with bigger problem ,bigger challanges and all against the odds they made it.

    Very funny. You contradict yourself.

“positive-thinking and proper mind setting will be of big help guys. ”

These two were also there in the 1960s and 1990s. The result is well-known and seen everyday. You forget other important factors, Ashkayna, and that is the implementation part. Proper implementation of the needed steps are necessary.

They made it because the president(s) there didn’t focus and blame on the wrongdoings of the respective past administrations but focused on the national development (in this case Indonesia).
