Cathay may soon fly out of Clark

Carrier wants direct flights to HK, China

Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific, one of the world’s largest airlines, may start flying out of the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) in Clark Freeport, Pampanga.

Clark Development Corp. president and CEO Felipe Remollo said officials from the Chinese airline were in town earlier this week to discuss the possibility of daily flights from Clark.

“They are considering direct flights to Hong Kong and other cities in China. They want daily flights,” he said in an interview Thursday.

If plans push through, Cathay Pacific would be the largest airline to fly out of Clark, which is being groomed as the next premiere international gateway to replace the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila.

DMIA is currently used mainly by local and international budget carriers.

Cebu Pacific of the Gokongwei group has named Clark as one of its three major hubs in the country, the other two being Manila and Cebu.

Malaysian giant Air Asia, through its newly formed subsidiary Air Asia Philippines, and Southeast Asian Airlines (SEAir), have also chosen Clark for their own hubs.

Several foreign airlines also call Clark their home in the Philippines.

These include Korea’s Aseana Airlines. Remollo said the increase in flights to Clark would help decongest NAIA, which is struggling with aging facilities and rapidly increasing passenger traffic.

More convenient

He said Clark is also a more convenient facility for people living in northern parts of Metro Manila all the way to provinces like Tarlac, Pangasinan, and Ilocos Sur and Norte.

“If you look at that catchment area, it accounts for about 25 million people. If someone living there needs to take a flight out of the country, it will be better to get to Clark than to go all the way to Pasay,” he said.

Cathay Pacific will be taking advantage of the government’s adoption of an “open skies” policy, which is part of the administration’s strategy to increase tourist arrivals to the Philippines.

‘Open skies’

The “open skies” policy, outlined by President Aquino in Executive Order 29, which was signed earlier this year, liberalizes the granting of international air rights for all points outside of Manila.

The government now expects to attract 10 million tourists annually to the Philippines by 2016.

This was a revision from the previous target of six million. Last year, just over three million foreigners visited the Philippines.

    If the Hi-Speed Train breaks down.  Which it will.  Then all flights will be severely affected.

    Mas tipid  ang gobyerno kung buksan ang NIAA 3 habang ginagawa ang NIAA 1..at ilink ang 3 terminal NIAA1,2,3 via monorail kaysa ibenta ang NIAA 1, at 3 . Ang NIAA 3 cost na govt almost 1.0 B USD while NIAA 2 is not owned by Govt.. This was financed by Lucio Tan and others. How the govt could sell the 3 terminals and with the runway?? The runway cannot be sold by the govt as the said runway  also serve the Domestic Flights , private aircrafts, and Phil Airforce not only the international flights. Mar Roxas should again ask his technical guys to verify the property they  are planning to sell at estimated amount USD 2.5 B.

    To build the dedicated  fast train to Clark is not a feasible option.Unless they are going to use the same track of  North Rail, I think the project is not feasible.. The right of way itself  for the rail track will be an enormous amount, that is more than 100 km, it will be in  billions of pesos. If the contract will be given to Manny Pangilinan then he can build the track above the NLEX and only the construction which will be in billions of dollars.Just do your math, the MRT 3 which is just more than 15 kms cost more than USD 1.0 B and you have an idea how much it cost. The USD 2.5 B has to be multiplied by 7 and we can have the fast train that Mar Roxas was talking at USD 15 B excluding right of way..

    The NIAA 1,2,3 is the ideal place  with the supplementary DMIA at Clark . This is like Heathrow International Airport with a supplementary Gatwick InternationalAirport both in London. The govt has only to expropriate properties parallel to the runway for expansion of the runway which will  cost the govt from  3 to 5 billion pesos and develop/extend the MRT and LRT to NIAA-1,2,3 plus improve the roads to and from the NIAA to avoid traffic congestion either construction of elevated roads or an interchange.

    Just add a high speed train from Clark to a transport hub in Makati and close NIAA –  sell the land to pay for the high speed train and new terminal at Clark.  Philippines gains a world class air terminal, and modern transport – everyone wins as the expense/revenue is a wash!

    Hayan ang korapsunes ng mga imigration ang foreigners coming to Clark malayu sa Manila .  . . .  damami ang drugs, prostitutions, businesses that are not properly scrutinized, maybe as fronts . ..  etc. etc.

    I guess we need to change the name to Jose Abad Santos International Airport rather having macapagal tied into it. Making it as a major hub for international flight is a major impact on our economy making it also a domestic hub will bring more income to the whole country. We should also open Laoag as a domestic airport to alleviate the problems in commuting tireless hours from Manila. I also agree that we need to construct new and better facilities to entice visitors and also keep in mind that we need also to tighten up our national and international security, lets not the Governor, Congressman, Senator nor any politician intervene with Airport security. No more Ramona Revilla stunt!..The longer she vanish, lest  we forget!!

    Pabor ito sa mga taga North Luzon, mas malapit kesa pupunta pa sila sa Pasay.  I think the government should now start upgrading the airport into a world class facility.

    Clark airport can be compared to our Kalibo airport. Looks and feels like an old domestic airport (yikes!!). The only thing going for Clark is its runway which was built to US standards.

    Hey, facilities in Clark are so poor. Better upgrade it first. Nakakahiya, pinaglakad kami sa tarmac kahit umuulan.
