Lighting plays an important role in the world of interiors. The dramatic positioning of light fixtures and indirect lighting could make an amazing difference in creating the mood for a living space.

Of the many lighting products in the market, I have discovered one that matches my personality.

FEATURED STORIES

Italian designer Enzo Catellani of the brand Catellani & Smith introduced me to his creative lighting world and I was totally astonished with his brilliance. The ball of metal cables and the LEDs called “Fil De Fer” and the playful “Turciù” are some of his iconic lamps.

Enzo is a whimsical Italian bon vivant with a heart for art and design. He walked me through some of his lamps, telling me how his creative process starts with a piece of raw material like aluminum, bronze, gold leaf, or glass. He deforms, stresses , and rips the materials to achieve otherworldly shapes that come alive with light.

Enzo’s creations are being sold worldwide and can be found adorning prestigious places such as the National Gallery in London, or inside Gaudì’s historical masterpiece, Casa Batlló, in Barcelona.

“When dealing with creativity, mutability and incoherence are the only symptoms you do not need to treat.” This, Enzo shared at the opening of the Manila Showroom recently.

Local contest

During his visit, he had a chance to see some of our best art galleries and said he particularly loved the colorful paintings of artist Chati Coronel, whose work was on display at Silverlens gallery at the time.

He was so impressed with the creativity of Filipinos as a people that he wants to set up a contest for local students and young artists to submit their lighting designs. The winner will have his or her creations manufactured and sold worldwide by Catellani & Smith.

This was an initiative that speaks of his dedication for preserving and nurturing craftsmanship even in a country that is so far away from his homeland of Italy.

In the Philippines, Catellani & Smith’s creations are distributed by Anthropology Resource Inc./PLC 107 Showroom, located at Warehouse 19, La Fuerza Compound, 2241 Don Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City.
