Banknotes with new BSP governor’s signature, enhanced designs out
Besides the signature of current Governor Nestor A. Espenilla Jr., the new generation currency (NGC) banknotes released featured enhancements to the designs, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said.
The new NGC banknotes now bear the signature of Espenilla, took over the helm of the central bank in July, making him the fourth governor of the BSP.
“These NGC banknotes shall be issued to authorized agent banks for withdrawal of the general public,” the BSP said in a statement.
According to the BSP, the newly released NGC banknotes were enhanced “to highlight significant moments in the nation’s history, as well as its world heritage sites and iconic natural wonders.”
“The Philippine banknotes remain a constant reminder of the Philippine patriotism and bravery, and centuries of journey for the Filipino people’s better future,” the BSP noted.
For the P200 bills, the BSP said there were “changes in the images in the obverse side of the banknote, particularly those depicting the Declaration of Philippine Independence and Opening of the Malolos Congress.”
As for the P50 bill, the text “Leyte Landing” in old banknotes was made “Leyte Landing October 1944.”
For the P1000 banknote, the BSP deleted the image of the Order of Lakandula Medal and the phrase “MEDAL OF HONOR” in the front side of the banknote, it said.
For all the other banknotes, the formats of the scientific names were tweaked alongside bigger font sizes of the year marks, the BSP said.
“The BSP, with its commitment in maintaining the integrity of the Philippine currency, is considering further enhancements for the NGC banknotes such as inclusion of braille marks for the visually impaired and other improvements in the security features,” it added.
