Saving electricity does not only bring down your monthly power bill, but it also saves the environment and helps the economy.

Electronic appliances and devices, even if switched off, still consume up to 20 percent of your household electric bill when plugged. This is called “phantom power” which is described as electricity drawn from electrical outlets when home electronics are not in use.

You can only imagine the soaring rates electricity can consume when it is plugged.

With the advent of energy-efficient appliances, energy consumption in some parts of the world has already been reduced at the very least.

But some are wary of these kinds of appliances. They think these are of lower quality than those they have grown accustomed to. But according to Greenpeace Philippines—an independent global campaigning organization that acts to protect and save the environment—high efficiency appliances consume up to 10 times less electricity, yet offers the same functionality.

“Using only highly efficient and money-saving appliances can reduce the electricity consumption of an average household to as low as 1,300 kilowatt per hour (kWh) per year, without any loss of comfort,” Greenpeace Philippines said.

Having an energy-efficient home has its own benefits.

First, it will save you money by bringing down your electric bill. The use of energy-efficient appliances in a household can lead to savings of around P1,426 monthly, or P17,112 yearly.

You can also do your part in saving Mother Earth. Forty-three percent of the power generated in the Philippines comes from coal, followed by natural gas at 24 percent and geothermal plants at 13 percent.

Coal plants emit carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and these gases create a greenhouse effect, which then results in global warming.

But with the use of energy-efficient appliances, it is expected that you will use less energy, which then means less consumption and consequently, lower gas emissions.

The economy will also benefit from the usage of energy-efficient appliances. Energy efficiency can greatly reduce energy demand. There will also be less stress imposed on the environment due to low energy demand and use. Eventually, this will lead to lower cost of services and better products.

Also, the advanced features in energy-efficient appliances can improve quality of life.

Who would have thought that a smart refrigerator can now tell when to defrost or what kind of fruits and vegetables are about to rot? These appliances adjust to the environment of the household.
