Hayon sketches for Manila
Studio Dimensione & Fritz Hansen brought in the young Spanish designer, Jaime Hayon, to Manila to sponsor a lecture event for professionals, students, and enthusiasts from the design community—arts, interior design and architecture.
The lecture was held at the Playground, Bench Tower 30th St. cor. Rizal Drive, Bonifacio Global City.
The local design community gathered for this prestigious event.
Professionals—architects and designers—alongside students from different design schools and design enthusiasts all came out for this design superstar, who was earlier named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most relevant creators of our time and was listed by Wallpaper Magazine as one of the most influential creators of the last decade. In 2008, Hayon was the guest of honor at Belgium’s Biennale Interieur—the youngest person ever to receive this accolade.
Thanks to Studio Dimensione and Fritz Hansen’s efforts, Hayon was able to share his insights about his design philosophy and essence. He came to Manila for the first time to discuss his art, furniture, and inspirations.
Despite his success, the Spanish designer continues to resist habitual thinking. Hayon’s trademark is constant movement, and he is always on the lookout for that indefinable, never-before-seen feature that can bridge the gap between art and design.
He is often inspired by circus elements, and his sketchbooks, which he always carries with him, are filled with new, graffiti-like sketches for new designs.
His works have appeared in the most prestigious art and design publications worldwide. He has won numerous awards including “Best Installation” by Icon Magazine, “100 Top list” and “Breakthrough Creator” by Wallpaper Magazine, Elle Deco International Award 2006, 2012 and 2016, Elle Deco Germany: “Best International Designer” 2008, “Best Designer” for Elle Deco Japan in 2008, Ad Russia “Designer of the Year” 2009, Maison Objet Designer of the Year 2010, among many others.
In his collaborations with Fritz Hansen, Hayon has excelled in inventing new takes on furniture design, infusing durability with a rebellious attitude.
The result of Hayon’s first collaboration with Fritz Hansen, the highly popular FavnTM sofa (2011), beautifully merged the Spaniard’s spirited expression with minimalist Danish design aesthetics.
Since then, Hayon has designed numerous pieces for Fritz Hansen, including the RoTM easy chair, a responsive design that invites relaxation in the midst of hectic everyday life and is aptly named after the Danish word for tranquility. Other examples of Hayon’s warm, welcoming, flamboyant and humorous designs are the multifunctional table AnalogTM, the easy chair FriTM, and the dining chair SammenTM.
Hayon’s newest creation for Fritz Hansen is the sculptural and modular LuneTM sofa. In Danish, the word lune refers to a certain coveted, ideal temperature and the feeling one gets when everything is just right.
In short, a perfect combination of Jaime Hayon’s unique style and Fritz Hansen’s tradition of craftsmanship.
“Design needs to solve the problem and be long lasting. But it is important to remember that my design is made for humans—to be used by humans. I believe that design should provoke emotions. Design should make you feel good. Create happiness.” Hayon shares this happiness through his creations.
