Creating productive working environment with Gen Y and Gen Z

05:23 PM June 08, 2017

The global workplace dynamics is changing with the advent of new generation of leaders – the millennials. At the recently concluded Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Manila, international business leaders have pledged to mentor small businessmen, and noted the urgency of grooming young workers into the management ladder.

Prospective mentors, however, should note the difference between millennials, who are brimming with confidence and enthusiasm but lack competence, and Gen-Xers who lack confidence but have competence, said Boris Joaquin, president of Breakthrough Management Consultancy.

We need to move beyond these labels to bridge the generation gap. This maybe one of business’ biggest challenges today. But even differing views and cultures can be harmoniously patched together with the right leadership approach. Encourage a better working relationship by:

Pool of talent – A team that constitutes various generations means a pool of talent and skills – an advantageous spot for any business. This can fill skills gap in team clusters with skills development opportunities.

Partnership and mentorship – Partner expert managers with potential young leaders. Both can learn new technology, management and people skills from each other. This will help employees connect generational divide as they work closer together.

Diversity – Each generation understand their roles and strengths, and they want to be recognized for their work in the organization. Millennials value open and transparent leadership and this can lead to an open and inclusive management.

At the Emerging Leaders Summit, Boris Joaquin will talk about the convergence of two biggest members of workforce today – the old-timers who are about to retire, and the youngsters who are destined to climb the management ladder.
