Pampanga biomass deal OK’d

Local developer Pampanga Green Management Inc. (PGMI) will finally push through with the proposed $63-million co-generation biomass facility that will not only help boost electricity supply in Luzon, but will also ease the perennial problem of waste management in Pampanga.

This was after the contract for the processing of waste into energy was recently signed by Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda, Lubao Mayor Mylyn Pineda Cayabyab and James Mackay, chairman of Mackay Green Energy Inc.

In a statement, Mackay Green said the landmark agreement forged with provincial and municipal government officials will guarantee the supply of 800 metric tons of municipal solid wastes per day and will provide for the site for the planned power plant.

By processing 800 metric tons of these wastes per day, the proposed facility will be able to generate an initial 22 MW of additional power, which can further be increased to 35 MW when fully integrated, the company said.

The biomass power project will be completely funded by PGMI, a local subsidiary of Mackay Green, while the parent firm will provide the technology to be used for the facility.

Mackay Green claimed that at present, it is the leader in existing technology for the waste management systems, with its “revolutionary turbines” that are currently under contract in 18 different countries. The system that the company plans to implement will no longer have the need for landfills and can even “mine” existing landfills.—Amy R. Remo
