NEW YORK — Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates is still America’s richest man, taking the top spot in the Forbes 400 list for the 20th straight year with a net worth of $72 billion.

Investor Warren Buffett, the head of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., remains in second place with $58.5 billion, while Oracle Corp. co-founder Larry Ellison stays third with $41 billion.

Brothers Charles and David Koch, co-owners of Koch Industries Inc., stay tied for fourth with $36 billion each.

Forbes says America’s super rich continued to increase their wealth over the past year, with the 400 people on the list posting a combined net worth of $2 trillion, up from $1.7 trillion a year ago.

That marks their highest combined value ever.

Forbes attributed the growth to strong stock and real estate markets.

The richest American in the world is Carlos Slim Helu from Mexico.

      SIM is Mexican.

      >>>Carlos Slim Helú is a Mexican business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. From 2010 to 2013, Slim was ranked as the richest person in the world, but that position has been regained by Bill Gates.<<<

        Mexican from Central America…
Wiki must be quoting bloomberg billionaires, forbes has Carlos Slim at #1 with 73B while bloomberg at #2 with 66.3B

And the rising gap between the rich and poor in the US continues.
Pretty soon, their middle class would be negligible, just like in Third World countries, if they don’t do anyting about it.

This is not accurate. Gates maybe the richest American, but he just placed second to Carlos Slim Helu [$73 Billion] in world ranking. Gates net worth as per Forbes 2013 list is $67 Billion, not $72 Billion as indicated in this report.

    • maximus_meridius

The article says “Bill Gates is the richest person in the U.S.”, not “the richest in the world”.

      • mamerto

GMA, & Marcos were richer…, by more than a “mile”.
        JLN only got $783,443,655.
        Times P43.68 = P30 Billion PLUS.

$67-Billion or $72-Billion…, I could not tell the difference.
      I tried counting…, but only reached $674,426,934.
